Every year it was the same. I was excited to meet and greet my new students. See those smiling faces. Glimpse the eagerness in their expressions.
But, inevitably, it would happen. You know back-to-school night.
You’re standing at your door greeting parents. For a few years, we were asked to present a 10-minute lesson for the parents and students. (I preferred those.)
Anyway, some parents are waiting to talk to me. One parent steps up and says, “My Johnny loves science. It’s his favorite subject.” To which I would beam and smile at Johnny. Sometimes, jokingly…but with seriousness…I’d reply, “Wow, that’s great. It’s my favorite subject too.”
And, I meant it.
Then other parents would come up introduce themselves and say, “Science was never my best subject. I always did better with history…(or something like that).”
Down deep inside, I cringed because the child, usually, took on the attitude of the parent.
Outwardly, I would smile and ask “What didn’t you like about it?” or comment “This class is different. Samantha will come to enjoy science.”
Inevitably, as the year progressed, it became apparent that Jimmy, Susie, or Callie had the wrong impression of science.
When pressed, they would admit that they didn’t like science because Mr. Jones or Mrs. Swift didn’t share my enthusiasm for science. So, their way of approaching science put a bad taste in some student’s mouths.
I’ve dealt with my fair share of students with preconceived notions of what science is like. And, I made it my mission to change their minds.
I recall a young lady (I’ll call her Sally. There were many James’, Sally’s, and Collins). Sally moped a lot in class.
When I asked why she wasn’t working, she told me matter-of-factly that she didn’t like science. I asked why. And, she, like so many others said they weren’t good at it. “I’ve never been good at science!”
Naturally, I pressed in further and learned that her Mom and/or Dad did poorly, or that Sally didn’t get along with a past science teacher. I don’t like you = shut down
Initially, she continued this learned pattern by refusing to do what she imagined were “harder” assignments. But, as time passed, and she gained confidence through a different teaching approach, she came to enjoy science. She saw that many science topics she thought were hard, weren’t hard at all.
It’s not always an easy road to success for these students. But, I have changed the minds and attitudes of many a “science opponent”.
How did I change their minds? It was partly my attitude, outlook, and persistence, and partly the activities and methods I used to teach.
I made it my goal to make science understandable, relatable, and engaging. I accomplished this through how I taught, the activities I used, and the choices I gave students.
